Slovakia has broken its national temperature record for the second consecutive day as the ongoing heatwave continues. According to preliminary data from the Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute (SHMÚ), the temperature at the weather station in Kamenica nad Hronom, in the Nitra Region, reached 41.3°C on Tuesday.
If confirmed following verification, this will become the highest temperature ever officially recorded in Slovakia, surpassing the 41.0°C recorded just one day earlier in Turňa nad Bodvou.
According to meteorologists, the 40°C mark was also exceeded on Tuesday, 30 June, at at least two other weather stations in the Banská Bystrica Region: Dolné Plachtince (40.5°C) and Bušince (40.4°C).
The extreme heat is affecting not only Slovakia. Kamenica nad Hronom is located just 65 km from the Hungarian town of Szécsény, where a new national temperature record of 42°C was also set on Tuesday.
Drought
The effects of the prolonged heatwave are becoming increasingly severe.
Due to drought and sharply rising water consumption, the West Slovak Water Company has introduced water-use restrictions in nearly 30 towns and municipalities across the Nitra and Trnava Regions, including Šaľa, Galanta, Mojmírovce, Cabaj-Čápor and several other localities.
The utility warned that without these restrictions, water levels in reservoirs could fall below critical thresholds, potentially leading to a complete interruption of water supply and creating a risk to public health.
Residents have been urged to use water only for drinking, cooking, personal hygiene and other essential household needs, while avoiding filling swimming pools, watering gardens and lawns, or washing cars.
To stabilise the situation, the water company is regulating water distribution, replenishing reservoirs with tanker trucks and delivering drinking water to the areas experiencing the most severe shortages.
Wednesday Forecast
The heatwave is expected to begin easing on Wednesday. According to the SHMÚ forecast, daytime temperatures will still reach 32–37°C, while Orava and Spiš are expected to see temperatures of around 30°C.
During the afternoon, a cold front approaching from the west will bring rain, heavy showers and, in some areas, severe thunderstorms capable of producing up to 50 mm of rainfall. By the evening, a noticeable drop in temperatures is expected across most of the country.
